LONGEVITY

Antioxidants – Guardians Of The Skin
There are many ways that one can adopt to boost antioxidants for healthier and younger-looking skin, but there is also that danger of overindulgence as well.

Antioxidants are like mops that clear up the morning-after party – spilt wine and broken glass. Antioxidants act to neutralize free radicals and prevent additional damage from occurring inside and outside of our cells. Now, how do these antioxidants act as guardians of our skin? How do they get there? What types of antioxidants are most effective in enhancing elasticity and youthful complexion?

The skin, our largest organ, is often a good indicator of what goes on inside our bodies. Sensible lifestyle factors are important in maintaining youthful skin. Avoiding exposure to harsh UV rays is particularly important in retarding the formation of damaging free radicals thus preserving skin. Minimizing UV radiation damage is one of the simplest and most important ways to preserve skin elasticity and youthfulness.

Good nutrition plays a significant part in the health of our skin. There are many foods known for their antioxidant potential, all of which will affect the health of the skin. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, plums and pomegranate are all said to be rich in antioxidants, and indeed they are wonderful. However, some recent research suggests that the less sexy, modest beans, particularly small red beans, red kidney beans and pinto beans, are equally, if not richer, in antioxidant potential. In addition, beans contain wonderful fibres to maintain healthy bowel habits and are an ecologically sustainable protein source.

Other food sources rich with antioxidants include russet potato, artichokes, pecans, walnuts and hazelnuts, a couple of species of apples and spices like cinnamon, cloves and oregano, all of which are inspirations for creating culinary, antioxidant-rich delights.
